ChatGum needs access to the “GET_ACCOUNTS” permission to associate your ChatGum account with your email.
The latest Android SDK combines “GET_ACCOUNTS” into the contacts permission group. Therefore, asking for the “GET_ACCOUNTS” permissions will prompt for “contacts”.
ChatGum is NOT asking the for access to your contact list. You can verify this yourself by checking the APK manifest.
